The Pain Of Degenerative Disc Disease

If you have recently been told that you have Degenerative Disc Disease or DDD, then you are most certainly not alone. There are numerous individuals every single year who are shocked with hearing this devastating news.

However, there are thousands of people who have this frustrating disease and they may never even know it. This is the type of condition that can affect people in several different ways and there are a variety of different symptoms that they may experience as well. Degenerative Disc Disease can occur in different areas of the spine such as the cervical region of your spine, which is the neck area. It can also affect other areas such as the lumbar region of your spine, which is commonly known as your lower back area. If you happen to suffer from DDD in the discs in your neck you can experience several symptoms such as a tingling sensation in your fingers, your hand, and it can even travel up your entire arm.

You may also experience numbness that can occur just in your fingers, specific areas of your arm, or even numbness that is felt going down the entire length of your arm. Many people who suffer from this condition will often experience a large amount of pain with the symptoms they are experiencing. It is a misconception that you will only experience this pain only in the neck area because it can be felt in one or both of your arms as well.

If the discs in your lower back happen to be affected by degenerative disc disease, there are a number of different symptoms that you might experience such as sharp or shooting pains that can either be felt in your lower back, or shooting pains that can radiate down a portion of your leg or legs, or even down the entire length of your legs. Several individuals who experience this type of shooting pain will sometimes even experience problems with falling. This can happen at times you least expect it and many times it is simply caused because of the severe pain that seems to mysteriously happen out of nowhere and then it can also disappear as quickly as it occurred. Just as with discs that are affected in your neck area, you can also experience numbness in your lower back. This numbness may sometimes only be noticed in the toes or the feet, then other times it may seem to travel up or down the leg.

People who suffer from DDD can become frustrated because this is the type of disease that is not easily seen by others. Often when other people are not able to actually see the problem at hand, they have a hard time believing that there actually is a problem. This can be extremely upsetting to a person that is experiencing excruciating pain on a daily basis and their friends or family members simply do not understand or believe it because they cannot see it.

Over time a person who suffers from degenerative disc disease may find that they simply are unable to do the enjoyable things that they used to be able to do. It can severely alter the lifestyle that you were accustomed to for a large part of your life.

There are numerous different medications, therapy, and treatment that your doctor might recommend if you have been diagnosed with this troubling disease.

Many of these treatments and medications can be very effective in helping to control the amount of pain that you experience every single day. One important thing to remember if you suffer from DDD is to take care of yourself! Do not try to overdo the activities that you become involved in because it can result in worsening the symptoms that you are affected with.

Well said. I have DDD and it's hard to take enough care of myself and, yes, harder because others can't see it and believe it is real problem. Has it been suggested to you that by giving the digestive system the proper amino acid blend the body can heal lesions in the discs? Mine developed also into Fibromyalgia and this then was suggested and I find GREAT improvement. I wrote a hub about it.
